Keeping Your Motivation

January is over, and with it, the new years resolutions, right? Wrong!

For most people with the resolution to “get healthier” or “get in shape”, January is a strong month…. or at least couple of weeks. Many other people around you that may influence you are also working on the game goals and the motivation is there… for a little while at least. As January comes to a close though, the unfortunate reality is that many people have already given up on their goals and returned to their regular day to day patterns, albeit maybe with a couple healthier tweaks.

This is one of the hardest parts of health and fitness, maintaining your own motivation. When everyone else around you may not be pushing towards their goals as hard, and you only have yourself to hold you accountable, how do you do it? How do you maintain the same focus and determination that you had when January began?

I find that there are a few ways to help keep your progress strong and your mind focused on your goal. The biggest factor though, is finding thing to keep in your day-to-day life that help motivate you when you are starting to lose focus. Here are a couple suggestions…

  1. Use photos of physiques that you are striving for, to help remind you of your goal. (To be clear, do not compare yourself to others, but we all have an ideal physique that we would like to have. Using photos in a motivational way can be very helpful.)

  2. Follow people on social media who keep you motivated.

  3. Find an online health group to discuss your accomplishments and challenges.

  4. (Shameless Plug) Hire a Personal Trainer! Throughout the years I have had many clients tell me that they need the extra push to keep them accountable or they just wont do it.

It is way easier to say “well I tried” and go back to how life was before you set your goal… but what if you didn’t? What if this year, you kept pushing. What if this year is the year you actually achieved that goal and set a new one for next year? Health and fitness is all about breaking old patterns and habits in order to create new, more beneficial ones, that will provide greater rewards. So lets break your old patterns together and create an even better, healthier you in 2022!
